N.C. Arts Council Offers Residencies in California, Vermont
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 11, 2007) — Applications for one and two-month residencies for North Carolina artists at centers in California and Vermont are currently being accepted. The North Carolina Arts Council sponsors the programs.
Two artists will be selected for the 2007–2008 residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California and Vermont Studio Center, located in Johnson, Vermont. The deadline for Headlands residencies is June 1, 2007 (postmark), and the deadline for Vermont residencies is June 15, 2007 (receipt).
The N.C. Arts Council’s residency program provides both emerging and established North Carolina artists with valuable time to concentrate on their art.“The residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts and the Vermont Studio Center give artists much needed time to focus on their work,” said Mary B. Regan, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council. “Professional development for the artists in turn enriches our communities, serving as a catalyst for our creative workforce.”
Headlands Center for the Arts
Headlands Center for the Arts is accepting applications from composers, songwriters, choreographers, visual artists, film/video artists and writers. Two artists will be selected from among the applicants in these disciplines. The Center hopes that artists will develop new work from their residency experience rather than working on an existing project.Headlands is located in a 1907 fort at the Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in California. The North Carolina residency grant recipients will join a community of artists from California and elsewhere working in a variety of disciplines. The residency is for a two-month period and must occur between March 1 and August 15, 2008. The grant provides round-trip travel from North Carolina to Sausalito, lodging, dinner five nights a week and a $1,000 stipend.
Vermont Studio Center
The Vermont Studio Center is located in Johnson, Vermont, a traditional New England village in the Green Mountains. Founded in 1984, the Center occupies 30 historic buildings on either side of the Gihon River. The Center is the largest in the nation, with 50 writers and artists in residence at any given time. The North Carolina Arts Council supports two four-week residencies scheduled between October 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. One visual artist and one writer from North Carolina are selected each year through this program. The grant includes round-trip travel from North Carolina to Johnson, Vermont, lodging, studio or workspace and all meals. In addition to the Council-supported residencies, Vermont Studio Center may offer residencies to other North Carolina applicants during the year. The Council encourages these invitations, although no financial support is available for these applicants.

Applicants must also remain physically present in the state for the majority of the grant period.
